Chapter Twenty-One

Emma

He had never struck me as a coward. But it was tragedy that truly showed the worth of a man. When Riverwood needed him most, Mayor Gilbert hid inside the town hall. After the perimeter was taped off, Ernie left to comb the park for evidence. Terry went to check on Peggy. Liam and I went after the mayor.

Our footsteps echoed down the empty hall, me in my flats, and Liam in his rugged boots. It wasn’t hard to find him. Mayor Gilbert sat behind his massive, pristine oak desk in a tall, cushioned chair cramming chocolate down his throat. Not that I didn’t appreciate the calming effect of a good chocolate bar, but the man could have waited until everyone was out of the hole. He could have helped, period.

“Sheriff,” the mayor said. “Is everyone okay?”

“No,” I replied. “Everyone’s alive, but no one is okay. There’s a huge sinkhole just down those steps, there are people being murdered left and right, and you’re hiding out while Aleister Sharpe destroys Riverwood.”

“Now, Ms. Hiller, you’re the one in charge of the town’s public safety. If there’s a surge in crime, it’s you who’s responsible.” I was doing everything I could, and he would know that if he opened his eyes and stepped out of hiding. I wouldn’t take the blame for Sharpe and his wereminers.

“That’s true only in part,” I said. “We both know that there’s only me and Ernie on the payroll. This madness is well passed any reasonable-”

“You work for me, just like Mr. Sharpe does,” Gilbert cut in. “I’m sure Mr. Shar-”

“It’s his fault,” Liam said. “All of it.”

“And you’re the one who signed off on Eventide coming here in the first place,” I said. “You’ve shown nothing but support for the company that made this happen. So you’re going to make it right.”

“How am I supposed to do that? You saw the hole,” the mayor said. “I don’t even have a phone number to reach the man, or know a company that can fix the road.”

“You’re going to call Elkston, Greenville, whoever owes you favors. You’re going to get this fixed by this time tomorrow or someone else could get hurt,” I said.

“Are you… are you threatening me?” His face was pale, and he looked between us with wide eyes.

“No,” I said, dropping my shoulders. I couldn’t believe it. The cowardly man couldn’t handle a passionate speech without perceiving a threat. I was upset, not abusive. “It’s a hazard. I meant someone could fall in. Get it fixed.”

Then I stepped out of the room, and headed back down the hall with Liam at my side.

“You did great,” he said, taking my hand in his. “With everything that happened. Emma, you were amazing.”

“So were you,” I said. “And, Liam, I’m so sorry about breakfast. It was a stupid idea. I should have known that my mother would screw it up worse than I ever imagined.”

“It’s fine,” Liam said, pinning me to the wall between his strong, thick arms.
